Behind The White Coat: Meet Dr. Christopher Deery

From global health to the emergency department, Dr. Christopher Deery’s path to medicine has always been rooted in a desire to care for others.

Before attending medical school, Dr. Deery served as a Peace Corps health volunteer in West Africa and later worked in global health nonprofits, managing large scale public health initiatives. While this work was impactful, he found himself drawn to a more personal level of care. That desire to connect directly with patients ultimately led him back to medical school.

Now three years into his time with WEPPA, Dr. Deery reflects on the experience with enthusiasm. He has especially enjoyed the opportunity to work across multiple sites and values his role as part of the night team. What stands out most to him, however, is the culture.

“The sense of family here is real,” he shares. “When I faced a serious health diagnosis last year, the support I received from this group was overwhelming. I will never forget it.”

His impact on the team is felt just as strongly by his colleagues. As Dr. David Rosenbaum shares, “No one dives into their work with a consistently more positive attitude than Dr. Deery. I like to call him Cheery Deery.”

Outside of the emergency department, life is full in the best way. Dr. Deery and his wife, a physician scientist, are raising four boys ranging in age from 2 to 12. He describes their home life as semi organized chaos, but emphasizes the importance of being fully present in each moment.

Dr. Deery’s perspective on both medicine and life is grounded in simplicity and intention. His guiding principle is clear: be kind to everyone, and the rest will work itself out.

For those just beginning their journey in medicine, his advice reflects both humility and experience: work hard, learn from your mistakes, and do your best to find joy in the process.
