WEPPA's dedication to education
Wake Emergency Physicians, PA (WEPPA) attracts physicians who are passionate about the clinical practice of emergency medicine and thrive on mentoring the next generation of medical professionals. The culture within WEPPA is one of relentless pursuit of knowledge, unity, and the shared goal of enhancing patient care through education.
In 1996 UNC School of Medicine approached WEPPA and WakeMed to join them in establishing the UNC Emergency Medicine Residency Program training UNC EM residents in adult and pediatric emergency medicine. To date, WEPPA has had the privilege of training just over 200 emergency medicine physicians, 40 of whom chose to join WEPPA after completing their training!
Our commitment to education and reputation for excellence in training have continued to grow. Our learners now include UNC Medical students, Campbell DO students, as well as APP students from Campbell, Meharry, East Carolina, and Wake Forest APP Programs for their adult EM and pediatric EM rotations.
Additionally, the Children’s Emergency Department (CED) serves as the primary training site for the UNC PEM fellowship, which was established in 2006 and is supported by WEPPA and WakeMed and is the only PEM Fellowship in the triangle area. In addition to UNC EM residents, under WEPPA’s leadership, the WakeMed CED is the training site for UNC Family Medicine residents and for their pediatric emergency medicine training.

NC DIVERSITY AND EQUITY IN EMERGENCY MEDICINE SCHOLARSHIP FUND
The NC Diversity and Equity in Emergency Medicine Scholarship Fund was created by Wake Emergency Physicians, PA and Mid-Atlantic Emergency Medical Associates out of a desire to increase the number of underrepresented minorities in the medical field, specifically in emergency medicine. Scholarships are awarded to second-year MD or DO students or first-year Physician Assistant students who identify as underrepresented minorities and are attending school in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, or Virginia. Applicants should also either be a resident of North Carolina or intend to practice medicine in North Carolina immediately after completion of their degree program.
